Microsoft has now finished moving all its Hotmail users over to Outlook.com and is rolling out an update that adds SMTP Send and improved SkyDrive integration.
Currently, sending an email from another account such as a Gmail account will cause “on behalf of” to appear in the From field. The new SMTP Send feature routes emails through the original account’s SMTP server so the From field has only the email address from that account.
To set up SMTP Send, click on the cog wheel in the top-right corner, choose the “More mail settings” option, click the “Your email accounts” link in the “Managing your account” section and then click either the “Add a send-only account” or “Add a send-and-receive account”, depending on whether the account is only to send emails or to send and receive emails.
The improved SkyDrive integration makes it possible to select files from SkyDrive to add as attachments when composing an email. The files will automatically turn into thumbnails in the email and have the right permissions to allow only those who receive the email to access them.
These updates are currently rolling out and will be available worldwide in the coming weeks.
